Macy’s wurde am 28. Oktober 1858 in New York City an der Ecke 6. Avenue/14. Straße als R.H. Macy & Company gegründet. Gründer war der ehemalige Walfänger Rowland Hussey Macy. Als Firmenlogo wählte er einen roten Stern, den er als Tätowierung aus seiner Seefahrerzeit trug. Später zog Macy’s in die 18. Straße Ecke Broadway um, die eine der teuersten Einkaufsstraßen des 19. Jahrhunderts war.
