Die Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation ist an den Einlagen gemessen die mit Abstand größte Privat-Stiftung der Welt. Microsoft-Mitbegründer Bill Gates hatte im Jahr 1994 erstmals eine Stiftung mit dem Namen „William H. Gates Foundation“ ins Leben gerufen, die zunächst von seinem Vater geführt wurde. Im Jahr 1999 wurde sie in den heutigen Namen umbenannt. Sie hat ihren Sitz in Seattle mit etwa 1.376 Mitarbeitern und einem Stiftungskapital von 36,7 Mrd. US-Dollar. Seit der Gründung wurden insgesamt 36,7 Mrd. US-Dollar an Zuschüssen gezahlt, 2014 waren es 3,9 Mrd. Dollar, 2015 4,2 Mrd. Dollar und im Juni 2017 erneut 4,6 Mrd. Dollar. Die Zuschüsse fließen in alle 50 Bundesstaaten der USA und in mehr als 100 Länder.
Die Stiftung ist in drei Bereiche gegliedert: Globale Entwicklung, globale Gesundheit und das United States-Programm.
