Orville Wright flog den Flyer III erstmals am 23. Juni 1905. Der Flyer III hatte einen neuen Rumpf, aber im Prinzip das gleiche Antriebssystem wie der Flyer II und Flyer I. Nach einem Unfall am 14. Juli 1905 wurde die Größe des Höhenruders sowie dessen Abstand zu den Tragflächen verdoppelt. Die Steuerung der Tragflächenverwindung wurde in einem Steuerknüppel vereinigt.
Wilbur Wright gelang am 5. Oktober 1905 ein Flug über 38,6 km in 39,5 Minuten. Vier Tage später schrieben sie an den amerikanischen Kriegsminister und boten das Flugzeug ohne Erfolg zum Kauf an. Am 7. November 1905 zerlegten sie den Prototyp. Er wurde erst 1908 überholt und zwischen dem 6. und 14. Mai 1908 erneut in Kitty Hawk geflogen. Am 14. Mai stürzte Wilbur Wright in eine Sanddüne; das beschädigte Flugzeug wurde in einer Lagerhalle eingelagert und erst ab 1947 wieder restauriert.
