Das Massaker am St. Bartholomäus-Tag im Jahr 1572 war eine gezielte Gruppe von Attentaten und eine Welle katholischer Mob-Gewalt, die gegen die Hugenotten (französische calvinistische Protestanten) während der französischen Religionskriege gerichtet war. Bei diesem Angriff wurden in weniger als 24 Stunden zwischen 5.000 und 10.000 Protestanten slaughtered. Als der Papst in Rom von den Nachrichten hörte, war er so überwältigt von Freude, dass er festliche Gebete organisierte, um den Anlass zu feiern, und Giorgio Vasari beauftragte, einen der Räume des Vatikans mit einem Fresko des Massakers zu dekorieren. Der Raum ist derzeit für Besucher gesperrt.
