Description

Lech (1444 m; 1200 inhabitants) is the main settlement of the Tannberg area. The municipality includes Oberlech, Zug, Stubenbach, and Zurs. It has long held this prominent position. The Gothic church with its heavy tower dates back to the time when the Walliser farmers had yet to conquer this place in nature (14th and 15th centuries). And on the site where the Alte Krone stands now, once stood the Tannberg court founded in 1563, where the Walliser judicial authority was exercised over the entire region and the Klein Walsertal.

Lech, nicely situated in a bowl of the Lech Valley, has also been trying to please its summer guests lately. Recently, a heated swimming pool and tennis courts have been established higher up in the Lech Valley. Further down in the valley lies the hamlet of Zug, and even further into the mountains are Lake Formarin and Lake Spuller, both accessible by road.

Directly above Lech, in a wooded area, is the part of the village called Oberlech (1669 m), which is accessible by a mountain railway. Oberlech is the starting point for mountain hikes via the Gipslocher (gypsum dolines; nature reserve with nature trail) to the Mohnenfluh (2542 m) and the Braunarl Spitze (2549 m). The mountain railway to Oberlech is one of four lifts that operate in summer (along with those to the Rüfikopf, Petersboden, and Schlegelkopf). The many other mountain lifts are only used during the winter sports season.
