Description

The giant circular painting, first exhibited in 1896, is a panoramic depiction of the third battle of Bergisel on August 13, 1809, and has been on display since its last relocation in 2011 at the Tirol Panorama at Bergisel, in the southern part of the city of Innsbruck, in the direct vicinity of the battle. The commission for the creation of the giant circular painting, completed in just three months, was awarded to Michael Zeno Diemer. His work was supported in the preparation by Franz von Defregger and in the execution by Franz Burger, W. Flaucher, Anton Niedermaier, and A. Pätzold. Covering more than 1000 square meters, the events of the successful third battle of Bergisel for the Tyrolean sharpshooters on August 13, 1809, are depicted: 15,000 Bavarian, Saxon, and French soldiers under the command of the French Marshal Lefèbvre faced an equally large Tyrolean sharpshooter contingent positioned on the mountain. Due to their unfavorable positioning, the occupying troops were heavily defeated by the otherwise poorly armed insurgents. The occupying army was then forced to retreat from the Innsbruck region. Contrary to historical facts, Andreas Hofer is shown as the leader of the insurgents in the midst of the battle.
