The counts of Egmont and Hoorn were beheaded on 5 June on the Grand Place in Brussels by the actions of Alva.
In a letter to Alva, King Philip II had urged convictions and requested executions. His request was granted. The Council of Troubles (1567-1576), chaired by Alva himself, immediately began his trials. The executions would follow shortly thereafter and in rapid succession. The number of trials would rise to seven to eight thousand within three years. Various sources mention 1,073 death sentences and 11,130 banishments during the six years of Alva's regency. Half of that number of sentences were pronounced in 1568.
