The fortress of Zandvliet has long since disappeared and has been transformed over time into the charming village we know today.
Yet, many silent witnesses of Spanish domination still remain. For instance, we can still spot the seven-pointed star in the street plan of Zandvliet, as well as the remnants of the defensive walls surrounding the village.
Many street names also remind us of these turbulent times: the Zuidvest, the Noordvest, and also the Conterscherp, where we are currently walking.
The name Conterscherp is derived from the French "Contr'escarpe", a reference to the steep outer slopes of the former fortress moat. (escarpe = inner slope)
