Around 1980, an archaeological structure was investigated that probably dates back to the early Middle Bronze Age. Moortsele was first mentioned at the end of the 9th century as Mortesela and in 1148 as Mortesella. The Saint Bavo Abbey owned property there, and in the 13th century, Moortsele became part of the Land of Rode. Since the late Middle Ages, there was a moated noble seat, the Castle ter Burcht. This was demolished in the mid-19th century.
