Gistel is especially known for its Flandriens: former cyclist Johan Museeuw, winner of, among others, the Tour of Flanders, and Sylvère Maes, winner of, among others, the Tour de France in 1936 and 1939.
An important event is the annual St. Godelieve procession, honoring Saint Godelieve of Gistel. The convent established in her honor, Abbey Ten Putte, is one of the most well-known pilgrimage sites in West Flanders.
