This building is also known today as De Rotonde. This luxurious palace hotel, designed by the renowned architect Octave Van Rysselberghe, was officially opened in 1911 and according to tradition, it is the only building in Westende-bad from before World War I...
The Germans install anti-aircraft defenses on the roof, and it is therefore frequently targeted by the Allies. It emerges severely battered from the war but is saved by a sturdy concrete structure.
The hotel also survives World War II and the construction boom along the coast. A remarkable achievement. Today it is a protected monument.
Photo: after the war, the first front tourists come to see the damage for themselves (collection Els Bloes).
