Pierre Harboort was part of the Piron Brigade, a brigade of Belgian war volunteers that was incorporated into the British army and took part in the liberation of Western Europe. Sergeant Pierre Harboort was severely injured in August 1944 during a demining attempt near Salenelles (France). He was evacuated to England but died two days later in the military hospital of Wroughton. Harboort lived at what was then Brugstraat no. 1. As a tribute from the municipality of Heverlee, the beginning of Brugstraat has been named "Sergeant Harboortstraat" since August 28, 1948.
