Current free mixed primary school Sint-Franciscus, tracing back to the Catholic lower girls' school built in 1880 in the Sombeke district. Prior to that, education had already been provided by the religious of the Holy Joseph of Elversele, taken over by the Maricolen sisters from Waasmunster (since 1968 Mariazusters of Franciscus). Adjacent to Sombekedries, the sisters built a convent in 1890 next to the lower girls' school, with a home for abandoned children, orphans, the elderly, and boarding students, which was transformed into the Sint-Jozef boarding school with secondary education during the period 1914-1918. However, this landmark neo-Gothic complex designed by master builder Modest De Noyette has since been demolished.
