The south of Bruges was for a long time one large heathland.
With the arrival of the nobility who established their summer residences here, the forests also came. Trees indeed brought in money.
The Doeveren walking route starts at the scouts and guides center Merkenveld and follows slow roads along the buffer pond Pierlapont to the eponymous viewing farm.
The return route goes over the bridges in the nature reserve Doeveren where Galloway cattle graze freely in the mosaic of heath and semi-open forest.
