The Mombeek forms the winding boundary between Alken and Hasselt. At the deepest point of the valley, the old Mombeek flows parallel to its bigger brother. The wetter character of this valley has made it difficult to access since ancient times. Houses could not be built there, and modern agriculture also left the valley as it was. Today, it is a blue-green oasis in the fertile Haspengouw arable and meadow landscape.
