Village lime tree in Harbach

The village lime tree in Harbach is located in the municipality of Harbach, a district of Hilders, in the Fulda district in the Hessian Rhön and is a natural monument. The summer lime tree is situated about 540 meters above sea level on a small, elevated, sloped meadow bordered by walls on two sides, between two intersecting village roads. The lime tree is listed as a natural monument under the number 6.31.402 and the designation "Village Lime Tree in Harbach" by the Lower Nature Conservation Authority of the Fulda district.
The trunk is hollow and closed except for a small, fissure-like opening. At the base, it flares out wide and is moss-covered. At the top, the trunk is completely open with exterior branches forming the crown. A long time ago, the lime tree likely broke off at a height of five meters and has since regenerated through many trunk sprouts. Shoots are growing upwards in the hollow space. According to reports, the lime tree was topped in the 19th century. The branches were used as timber and were processed into wooden containers and troughs. The amount of wood is said to have been 20 solid cubic meters. The lime tree is in good condition with only a small amount of dead wood in the crown. The round crown sits at about four meters height on the trunk. The branches of the lime tree are held together by several steel cables.
