Wietkiekenberg

The Wietkiekenberg, at 124.7 m above sea level, is the highest elevation of the Zauche, a Vistula glacial high plain in the Potsdam-Mittelmark district of Brandenburg. The mountain is located in the district of Ferch in the municipality of Schwielowsee, within the landscape protection area of the Potsdam forest and lake region between the Schwielowsee and the Lienewitzer lakes. Previously, there was a 30-meter-high fire lookout tower on the summit. In 2012, it was replaced by a 55-meter-high antenna mast with a subsequently added observation platform.
The Wietkiekenberg is situated in the northeastern end moraine ridge of the Zauche, which formed around 20,000 years ago during the Vistula Ice Age, when the inland ice reached its maximum southern extent over the Zauche. In front of the end moraine ridge to the south, one of the largest sand areas in Brandenburg, the Beelitzer Sander, was formed. While its gently undulating sand cone largely defines the Zauche, the northern and eastern parts are more rugged, as morainic hills are intertwined with the sand. The predominantly dry soils consist of debris, debris marl, and sand.
