Quantwicker Mill

Description

The Quantwicker windmill was built around 1835 by Theodor Brockhaus and his wife Katharina, née Schulze Ameling. When their granddaughter, Bertha Brockhaus, married the heir of the Brockhaus estate at the Schulze Schwering farm in 1886, this mill came to the farm Schulze Schwering located in the village of Quantwick.
The octagonal mill features the well-known Dutch design: the octagonal base is sturdy. Only the cap, including the axis, the large spur wheel, and the blade ring, was turned into the wind on a rolling ring and with the help of the mill mechanism. Inside, there are three floors: the flour floor, the stone floor, and the cap floor. Two grinding passages and a bag box for fine flour were available.
Until around 1900, the windmill had a truly Münsterland appearance: the outer roofing was covered from top to bottom with overlapping wooden shingles. In this outfit, it appears once again after restoration. Significant roofing damage made it necessary to replace the board covering around 1900, which was covered with tar paper that had become fashionable at the time for protection against rain.
