The village located in the northern part of the Pegnitz-Kuppenalb is one of 23 officially named districts of the town of Betzenstein in Upper Franconia. It is situated about five kilometers south-southwest of Betzenstein and lies at an elevation of 556 m above sea level.
Due to the administrative reforms carried out in the early 19th century in the Kingdom of Bavaria, the locality became an independent rural community, which also included the church village of Riegelstein as the seat of the municipality, the villages of Eichenstruth and Illafeld, as well as the hamlet of Eibenthal. Later, the hamlet of Schermshöhe, which emerged in the second half of the 19th century, was added. As part of the municipal reform in Bavaria conducted in the 1970s, the entire municipality of Spies was incorporated into the town of Betzenstein on January 1, 1972. In 1987, Spies had a population of 145.
