The Otto Hahn School. Municipal secondary school for boys and girls – Herford is one of three secondary schools in the city of Herford and is named after the German chemist Otto Hahn. 39 teachers teach at the all-day school.
The school was founded in 1914 as a middle school. The first headmaster was Heinrich Decius from 1914 to 1921. During this time, the school was recognized as a fully developed institution. Gustav Schmalhorst was the headmaster from 1922 to 1924, during which time the school moved to its current location on Uhlandstraße. In 1933, only 1.5 percent of all students were allowed to be Jewish. In 1944, the school was destroyed by a bombing raid. In 1945, permission was granted for a reopening.
