Observation Tower Ellewicker Feld
The Ellewicker Feld is a vast wet grassland area located east of the Zwillbrocker Venn and was part of the extensive heath landscape in the border region until the 20th century. From an ornithological perspective, the nature reserve is particularly interesting due to its bird diversity and is part of the European Bird Sanctuary "Wheats and Heaths of Western Münsterland".
The Ellewicker Feld is an important breeding and resting place for Redshanks, the Eurasian Curlew, and the Northern Lapwing. The Marsh Harrier also finds a vast hunting area and sufficient food supply with small mammals, birds, and insects.
The grassland in the area is leased to local farmers. To ensure that the farming does not harm the birds breeding in the grassland, we regularly conduct population surveys of the bird species here and may postpone mowing until the young birds have fledged.
For observations, the observation tower on the Flamingo Route at the southern edge of the area is recommended.
