Givet is located in the well-known Devonian limestone outcrop. The limestone outcrop is a narrow band to the south of the Fagne-Famenne and consists almost exclusively of Upper Devonian limestone. It is like a step for the Ardennes. It is situated a lot higher than the Fagne-Famenne depression. The rivers from the Ardennes, which pass through this region, give rise to spectacular dissolution phenomena. In geology, these dissolution phenomena are called karst.
