The decapitated head of St. John the Baptist plays an important role in his martyrdom. According to tradition, John the Baptist was imprisoned and beheaded by order of King Herod Antipas, after Salome, the daughter of Herodias, at the insistence of her mother, asked for the head on a platter as a reward for her dancing. The head was given to Salome, who gave it to her mother. John's disciples later retrieved the body and buried it. This head symbolizes martyrdom and is commemorated annually on August 29 in both Catholic and Orthodox traditions.
