In quarries in the Geulhemmerberg in South Limburg, clay layers can be seen that were deposited just after the meteorite impact that marks the end of the Cretaceous. Until then there was a dominance of dinosaurs on land but that ended with a huge bang. The impact of a ten-kilometer asteroid on Yucatan, in present-day Mexico, caused a collapse of all terrestrial ecosystems and much of earth's marine ecosystems. The blow caused a severe climate crisis, and dinosaurs and marine organisms such as ammonites became extinct with impact, or shortly after.
