Overloon is known in the history of World War II for "the battle of Overloon." Near Overloon, one of the largest tank battles in the Netherlands was fought in early October 1944 between the 107th German Tank Brigade on one side and the 7th American and 11th British Armored Divisions on the other. Many villages in this area were completely destroyed.
