The church was built for Protestant worship and was designed by Jacob van Campen. The construction was made possible by support from Prince Frederik. The building was completed in 1641. Restoration was necessary in 1859, and in 1910 the church was completely destroyed by fire. It was rebuilt in a modified form. In 1951, during a restoration, the damage incurred during World War II was repaired.
