They are scattered like white pearls in the beautiful South Limburg landscape: the half-timbered houses and half-timbered farms. The 'skeleton' of the houses is made of wood, stones, straw, and loam. Until 1850, this was the normal way houses were built. Until the last century, farmers maintained these white houses with wooden frameworks themselves.
Terstraten was designated as a protected village view in 1969 due to the many well-preserved half-timbered farms and speck houses. The hamlet is known as a true painter's paradise. In 1952, one of the barns in the hamlet was demolished, only to be rebuilt later in the Netherlands Open Air Museum in Arnhem.
