Oosterhaar is a district in Haren located on the east side of the Groningen-Assen railway line. The population is 5,165 and there are 2,182 homes. Oosterhaar is a relatively young neighborhood with 31% people aged up to 25 years. There are three primary schools: OBS De Wissel, housed in a Community School called the Octopus, CBS De Borg and Het Mozaïek. On the Anjerplein is a new shopping center, opened in 2016. For this, rental homes on the Windeweg and the Anjerlaan had to be demolished. The district has an active neighborhood association 'Ons Belang' and the community center de Mellenshorst. Annual events are the festive week with a fair and the cycling tour of Oosterhaar, which was last ridden in 2017. Special facilities in the district are a medical nursery with a school for special education, the Bladergroenschool, a skating rink, the ecological care farm De Mikkelhorst and the walk-out area with hiking trails that continues to the railway line to Hoogezand. On the Sterremuurweg, the Meeting Church Haren of the Reformed Church has been cleared. The Haren Medical Center is located on the Mellensteeg. In mid-2019, a bicycle railway tunnel was completed at Walstroweg and Haren station, giving the district an extra bicycle access route in addition to the three railway crossings and making the centre of Haren and nearby schools more and safer accessible for cyclists.
