Description by the author

This route takes you past a number of war monuments and hiding places from the Second World War. The Drents-Friese Wold used to have large areas of dark forests that were difficult to penetrate. This made it an ideal hiding place. There were several hiding places. After the war, the caves fell into disrepair, but a number of them have been found and restored as best as possible to their original appearance. These caves have kept many people out of the hands of the occupying forces, but sometimes things went horribly wrong. The memorials at the hiding place in Diever and at the war memorial in Doldersum testify to this. A commemoration ceremony is held in Doldersum every year on May 4. Then the large bell that hangs here is rung, in memory of the young men who were murdered here.
