Description by the author

Latest update: November 13, 2024, due to a change in the location of the gravel path along the Molenbeek of Lottum at the confluence with the Maas.

The route starts from the church in Helenaveen and goes clockwise. 45% of the route is unpaved, but if you take the gravel road that runs along the asphalt bike path near Tienray, instead of the asphalt bike path itself, you will end up with 48% unpaved road. The route is very varied and you will ride over many unpaved roads (mostly gravel roads), namely:
- along the Mariapeel,
- along the Zwarte Plak heath,
- along De Put,
- through the Schadijkse Bossen and the Groote Broek,
- along the Groote Molenbeek,
- along nature reserve Schuitwater,
- by the castle of Lottum (Borggraaf),
- through the floodplains of the Maas,
- through nature reserve Kaldenbroek,
- through agricultural landscape between Grubbenvorst and Horst,
- through nature reserve de Reulsberg,
- around Sevenum in agricultural area,
- through nature reserves Heesberg and Gelderse Heide,
- through the Breedschen Peel
- and finally, you will end with a stretch of gravel road along the Helenavaart in Helenaveen.

Most gravel roads on this route are suitable for cycling. Some gravel roads are not accessible for traffic, others are, and with intensive use of these roads by agricultural or forestry traffic, the gravel roads may locally have slightly less well-maintained unpaved surfaces. Additionally, some unpaved roads (just west of Sevenum, namely the Steegbredeweg and Heesbredeweg) may be less suitable for cycling with thin tires (i.e. racing bike tires) during dry periods (more sand than gravel).

Since the southernmost point of the route runs just above Grashoek, the route can be extended via Grashoek, allowing you to incorporate the many gravel roads around Grashoek into an extended route (for example, through nature reserve Marisberg and along the Helenavaart back to Helenaveen).
