Above the arcades that connect the Praça de S. Tiago with the Largo da Oliveira is the Old Town Hall.
This building housed the men who governed the city. Construction began in the 14th century and lasted until the middle of the 15th century, when King Afonso V reigned. Afonso V reigned. Between the 16th and 18th centuries, the building underwent several alterations and renovations. Later, in 1877, a statue of a warrior from the old customs building was placed on the façade. According to tradition, this warrior symbolizes the dual contribution of the people of Guimarães to the conquests of Africa.
