This 1.80 meter statue by Teixeira Lopes was inaugurated in 1879 on the Central Avenue of Braga and moved in 1913 to the Mouzinho de Albuquerque Square, better known by its former name Campo Novo.
A competition was held for the monument and a jury was appointed by the Porto Academy of Fine Arts.
Teixeira Lopes was the only participant and was willing to change everything the jury suggested, but the jury "praised the perfection of the likeness".
The plaster model of the statue was exhibited in Porto City Hall at the author's request.
If you compare this statue with the one in Porto , you will notice the similarities between the two, which seems logical, since the portrait is the same and so is the author. But there are also differences: the most important is that the work in Porto is made of bronze, while the one in Braga is made of marble.
