The church was elevated to the status of basilica and the solemn proclamation took place on July 5, 2015.
This temple was built to replace the previous one. Construction began on June 1, 1784 and was completed in 1811.
The main façade is flanked by two towers, topped by a triangular pediment. On the sides of the main entrance, in niches, between the six-metre-high columns, are statues of the prophets Jeremiah and Isaiah , with inscriptions in Latin. In the centre, above the large window, is the coat of arms of John VI of Portugal , who in 1822 granted the sanctuary the same honours and privileges as the Misericórdias.
In the forecourt of the basilica, also designed by Amarante, are eight statues of figures who participated in the condemnation, suffering and death of Jesus Christ.
