La iglesia de San Bárbara es un ejemplo de una catedral minera. Todas las catedrales mineras, que también se encuentran en Winterslag, Waterschei, Zwartberg y Beringen, datan del período de entreguerras. Están construidas de ladrillo, lucen impresionantes y son algo desproporcionadas. San Bárbara en Eisden fue diseñada en 1934 por Auguste vanden Nieuwenborg en un estilo expresionista con elementos neogóticos.
La extracción de carbón ha dado lugar en Limburgo, más que en Borinage, a esta hermosa arquitectura.
