Originalmente, Molenbeersel no tenía iglesia; la mayor parte del territorio pertenecía a la parroquia de Neeritter. Cerca del antiguo centro de Molenbeersel, en la Oude Kerkstraat/Grootbroekstraat, había una capilla de San Leonardo desde 1772. En 1834, esta capilla se convierte en una iglesia independiente. La parroquia de San Leonardo, que abarca el actual territorio de Molenbeersel, se fundó en 1837.
