La construcción de la basílica comenzó en 1857, a raíz del dogma de la Inmaculada Concepción en 1854. Monseñor Malou, obispo de Brujas, quería una iglesia monumental para toda su diócesis, para honrar este dogma. Los planos eran del arquitecto inglés Edward Welby Pugin. La iglesia de Dadizele fue elevada a basílica en 1882 por el Papa León XIII. Junto a la Capilla de la Santa Sangre en Brujas, es la única basílica en la diócesis.
Las hermosas vidrieras relatan, además de la historia de la iglesia, varios hechos de la vida de María.
En la cripta vemos la tumba, las huellas, los guantes y la espada del Caballero Juan de Dadizele. La basílica es un monumento protegido.
