Tessenderlo puede derivar de la contracción de Taxandria (las Kempen en la época romana) y del latín locus o lugar.
Localmente se habla de "Looi" y los habitantes de este municipio son llamados "Looienaars".
En Tessenderlo se puede visitar la iglesia de San Martín (siglos XIV-XV) con el ábside de piedra, la iglesia de Santa Lucía, la dekanía en la plaza del mercado, el museo de naturaleza "Gerhagen" Zavelberg
y el mercado negro.
