En la primavera de 1909, Permeke volvió a Latem, con los amigos de Latem, pero allí vivía de forma más retirada e interesado principalmente por el pesado y pastoso toque de Albert Servaes, a quien ya conocía de su época en la academia de Gante; intercambiaron mucho, se hicieron amigos y pintaron juntos en el campo en y alrededor de Latem. Servaes, por cierto, ya podía ser considerado como el "Padre del expresionismo flamenco".
