Los Reyes Zancudos de Merchtem son mundialmente famosos y patrimonio inmaterial en Flandes.
La asociación de los zancudos de Merchtem se remonta a 1945. Nuestro país fue inundado por fiestas de liberación, también en Merchtem el 6 de junio. La idea era simple: un desfile de liberación donde cada barrio del municipio haría algo. Los Zancudos surgieron en la aldea de Langevelde. Antiguamente, durante el invierno, el Molenbeek se inundaba. Los habitantes que se dirigían a la iglesia o a la escuela tenían que hacer un desvío de dos kilómetros, mientras que de otro modo solo tenían que caminar quinientos metros. Así que se introdujo el uso de los zancos, con los que podían caminar por la zona inundada. Cuándo comenzó este uso, me resulta difícil decirlo, pero en los libros de historia el zancudo ya se remonta al siglo XIV.
