Asse era junto con Elewijt, Binche y Blicquy uno de los cuatro lugares principales de los Nervios. Los Nervios eran una tribu belga que, en el momento de la conquista por Julio César, habitaba en el norte de Francia y el sur de Bélgica, entre el Escalda y el Samber. La tribu controlaba un sector importante de la gran ruta comercial desde Colonia a Amiens (la Chaussée Brunehaut).
