Justo antes de que los Geuzes tomaran Lede el 8 de mayo de 1581, ya habían tomado el castillo. La conquista, según el Geuzenboek de Boon, transcurrió bastante fácil, ya que los soldados que defendían el castillo ofrecieron poca o ninguna resistencia a las tropas geuzas en avance. En ese momento, un gran número de tropas de guerra de Gante se habían unido a esas tropas geuzas.
