En el origen de este imponente cementerio de la Commonwealth se encuentra el hospital de guerra británico que estuvo alojado en el Instituto del Sagrado Corazón entre 1944 y 1945. Las 50 personas que allí fallecieron a causa de sus heridas fueron enterradas originalmente en el dominio del instituto. En 1946, el cementerio fue trasladado a su ubicación actual. En total, aquí han sido enterrados 1018 soldados, de los cuales 981 han sido identificados. Se trata de víctimas de operaciones terrestres y de tripulaciones aéreas que cayeron alrededor de Lovaina. También hay aquí 29 tumbas de la Primera Guerra Mundial, trasladadas de otros cementerios.
