El castillo de Zellaer fue construido en 1885 por encargo del barón de Vrière. La fortaleza de estilo neogótico fue diseñada por el arquitecto de Mechelen Heugenbaarts y es una copia de un castillo del Loira del siglo XV. Las piedras provenían de los fuertes de Vilvoorde.
Originalmente, ya existía un castillo feudal del agua a mediados del siglo XIII, fundado por Wouter Berthout. A principios de ese siglo XIII, ya se mencionaba a un Arnold de Zellaer como el primer residente.
En 1962, la orden laica Foyer de Charité se estableció allí y hasta 2016, el castillo se utilizó como centro de reflexión diocesano.
Desde 2001, tanto el castillo como la casa de la carroza están protegidos como monumentos.
En 2017, el municipio de Bonheiden se convirtió en propietario del veinte por ciento del dominio y se otorgó el dominio completo en arrendamiento a la asociación sin ánimo de lucro 'Kempens Landschap'.
La ambición es hacer que el dominio sea accesible para todos en 2018.
