Jef Planckaert fue uno de los mejores ciclistas belgas a principios de los años 60. 1962 fue su año culminante. En ese año, fue segundo en el Tour de Francia, se convirtió en campeón belga y ganó Liège-Bastogne-Liège y la carrera por etapas París-Niza. Jef falleció en 2007, dos años después recibió una estatua en su lugar de residencia, Otegem. Ten en cuenta que esta estatua no está en la red de ciclismo.
