Aquí en Rupelmonde nació el famoso cartógrafo Gerard Mercator. También fue aquí donde escuchó el epílogo de sus disputas con las autoridades eclesiásticas que lo acusaban de herejía. Así que en 1533 tuvo que abandonar Lovaina para evitar una investigación sobre sus creencias personales. Diez años después, fue arrestado por herejía en Amberes y encarcelado en Rupelmonde, pero logró escapar de este lío legal.
