Ya en 1105 había en el mismo lugar junto al Leie una capilla, fundada por la Abadía de San Bavón. Esta abadía competía en aquel tiempo con la Abadía de San Pedro, la otra abadía de Gante que había hecho construir en el centro de la ciudad la entonces Iglesia de San Juan y la Iglesia de San Nicolás. La actual iglesia en estilo gótico tardío fue comenzada en 1440 y de hecho solo terminó en 1825.
