En 1640 la gente hablaba del 'Nuevo Río', ahora el canal es comúnmente llamado 'la vía' por los habitantes de Middelkerke. Oficialmente: el canal Plassendale-Nieuwpoort.
El trazado del canal sigue en gran parte el lecho del antiguo Ieperleed. En su construcción en el siglo XVII, había unos 800 trabajadores cavando. El trabajo se realizaba con palas, carretillas y tablones que, una vez hincados en el suelo, se arrastraban para romper la tierra. Luego, los trabajadores utilizaban la tierra excavada para levantar diques a ambos lados del canal.
