Los disturbios religiosos de los siglos XVI y XVII, entre católicos y protestantes, no perdonaron a Lombardsijde y su población.
De esa oscura época también proviene la devoción a Nuestra Señora de Lombardsijde, una imagen de María milagrosamente arrastrada a la orilla. La antigua localidad se convirtió en un importante lugar de peregrinación para pescadores y especialmente para los que viajaban a Islandia. La imagen sobrevivió a muchas guerras y a veces fue protegida por los habitantes con el riesgo de sus propias vidas. En la iglesia actual todavía puedes admirar la imagen en el altar lateral izquierdo. También puedes ver algunas ex-votos que fueron ofrecidos por los pescadores. Todos los milagros atribuidos a la imagen están representados en las vidrieras.
