El Birsig es un río bastante pequeño en el este de Francia y el norte de Suiza. Su fuente está en la aldea de Biederthal, en el departamento francés de Haut-Rhin, cerca de la frontera suiza. El Birsig tiene aproximadamente 21 kilómetros de longitud, y su cuenca hídrica abarca unos 82 kilómetros cuadrados. Fluye de manera variable a través del territorio suizo y francés y por el Valle del Birsig. Después pasa por la ciudad de Basilea, donde desemboca en el río Rin.
El río Birsig originalmente fluía abiertamente a través de Basilea, pero hace mucho tiempo fue canalizado y sus orillas edificadas para prevenir daños por agua a las casas. El río fluía directamente a lo largo de las casas en la parte baja de la ciudad, donde se construyeron muchos puentes. Recogía los desechos fecales de las casas y por lo tanto era llamado "la gran cloaca de la ciudad", lo que favoreció el brote de cólera y tifus.
