Alrededor de 1100, los condes de Fenis adquirieron el lugar y comenzaron a fortificarlo. Burkhart de Fenis construyó el castillo a principios del siglo XII. Erlach fue un importante bastión de los condes de Neuenburg. Alrededor de 1265, Erlach recibió del conde Rudolf II de Neuenburg-Nidau el derecho a la propiedad. Como ministros de los condes, los caballeros de Erlach sirvieron como hombres de castillo en el castillo.
En 1474, Erlach pasó a manos de Berna y el castillo se convirtió en la sede del Landvogt bernés.
